How to Use Your Inspire Device for Sleep Apnea (After Activation)
The Inspire sleep apnea device is typically activated about one month after implantation
during a follow-up visit with your sleep specialist. During this visit, your doctor will
program the initial therapy settings, demonstrate how to use the remote, and provide a
step-up plan to gradually increase stimulation for comfort and effectiveness.
Turning Your Inspire Therapy On Before Bed
- Prepare for sleep as you normally would.
- Press and hold the Therapy On button on your Inspire remote (usually shown as a circle or power symbol).
- Hold the remote over the implanted generator site on your upper chest below the collarbone for about 10 seconds.
- You will hear a beep or see indicator lights confirming activation.
- You may feel a mild stimulation pulse or tongue movement, which confirms the device is working.
- Therapy typically begins after a delay of about 15–30 minutes to allow you to fall asleep comfortably.
Using the Inspire Device During the Night
The Inspire system automatically senses your breathing and delivers gentle stimulation
pulses synchronized with inhalation. This stimulation moves the tongue forward and helps
keep the airway open during sleep.
- If you wake during the night, you may pause stimulation using the pause button.
- Stimulation can be resumed when you are ready to continue sleeping.
- Pause the device whenever eating or drinking.
- Use Inspire therapy every time you sleep, including naps.
Turning Inspire Therapy Off in the Morning
- Press and hold the Therapy Off button on the remote (often marked with an “X” or stop symbol).
- Hold the remote over the implanted generator site again until you hear the confirmation tone.
- This stops stimulation for the remainder of the day.
Adjusting Stimulation Strength
The stimulation level can be adjusted using the remote control. Always remain within the
range programmed by your doctor.
- Use the Increase (+) button to increase stimulation.
- Use the Decrease (–) button to reduce stimulation.
- Follow your physician’s step-up schedule to gradually reach the most effective and comfortable setting.
Daily Tips for Using the Inspire Sleep Apnea Device
- Remote Battery: Replace batteries as needed and check indicator lights regularly.
- Mobile App: Some remotes connect to the Inspire app to track therapy usage and reminders.
- Travel: Carry your remote with you. Normal activities can typically resume once healing is complete.
- Electromagnetic Fields: Avoid strong industrial electromagnetic equipment.
Airport Security and Travel Considerations
If traveling, inform airport security personnel that you have an implanted medical device.
Metal detectors are generally safe, but consult your device manual for detailed guidance
regarding full-body scanners and hand-held screening devices.
MRI and Medical Procedure Safety
The Inspire system is considered MR Conditional. Always inform healthcare
providers that you have an Inspire implant before undergoing MRI scans or other procedures.
Tracking Your Inspire Therapy Progress
The Inspire mobile app can be used to track therapy usage and share data with your sleep
specialist. Regular follow-up appointments help optimize therapy settings and ensure the
best treatment outcomes.
