Wegovy (semaglutide) Tablets for Weight Loss

Daily Oral Medication for Weight Management

Wegovy Tablets are a daily oral version of the semaglutide injection. They target areas of the brain that regulate appetite to help you feel full sooner and reduce hunger.

1. Indications for Use

  • Eligibility: For adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with at least one weight-related condition.
  • Lifestyle: Must be used with a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

2. Dosage Schedule

To minimize stomach upset, your doctor will start you at a low dose and gradually increase it every 30 days:

  • Month 1: 1.5 mg daily
  • Month 2: 4 mg daily
  • Month 3: 9 mg daily
  • Month 4 & Beyond: 25 mg or 50 mg daily (Maintenance dose)

3. Expected Weight Loss

In clinical trials (OASIS 1), patients taking the 50 mg daily pill achieved significant results over 68 weeks:

Treatment Avg. Weight Loss (%) Avg. Weight Loss (lbs)*
Wegovy Pill (50 mg) 15.1% ~33 lbs
Placebo Group 2.4% ~5 lbs

*Based on a 220 lb starting weight. Nearly 30% of patients lost 20% or more of their body weight.

Critical Instructions for Success

For the medication to be absorbed, you must follow these steps exactly:

  • Take the tablet immediately upon waking on an empty stomach.
  • Take with no more than 4 oz (120 ml) of plain water.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral meds.
  • Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew.

4. Side Effects

Nausea is the most common side effect, especially during dose increases. Other effects include:

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Stomach-area pain or bloating
  • Heartburn/Acid reflux
  • Fatigue and dizziness

5. Important Safety Information

Boxed Warning: Thyroid Tumors Semaglutide caused thyroid tumors in animal studies. It is unknown if it causes these in humans.

  • Do not use if you or a family member have ever had Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) or MEN 2.
  • Symptoms to watch for: A lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing.

Other Serious Warnings:

  • Pancreatitis: Stop use if you experience severe, persistent stomach pain.
  • Gallbladder Problems: Including gallstones.
  • Vision Changes: Specifically for patients with Type 2 diabetes (diabetic retinopathy).
  • Pregnancy: Stop taking Wegovy at least 2 months before you plan to become pregnant.

6. Wegovy Pill vs. Injection

  • Convenience: No needles or refrigeration needed for the pill.
  • Efficacy: The 50 mg daily pill provides weight loss results almost identical to the 2.4 mg weekly injection.
  • Strictness: The pill requires a strict 30-minute fasting window every morning, whereas the injection can be done any time of day with or without food.

7. Manufacturer Coupons

We want to ensure your prescribed treatment is as affordable as possible. Many pharmaceutical manufacturers offer Copay Savings Cards that can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

While our office assists in identifying potential savings, manufacturer discount programs are third-party entities. Pulmonary and Sleep Consultants does not administer these programs and cannot guarantee eligibility or the final cost of your medication. Programs are subject to change or cancellation by the manufacturer without notice.
