Mandibular Advancement Device of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Understanding Mandibular Advancement Devices

A Modern Solution for Sleep Apnea & Snoring

What is a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)?

A Mandibular Advancement Device is a custom-made dental appliance designed to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It looks similar to a sports mouthguard but serves a much more technical purpose: keeping your airway open while you sleep.

How It Works

During sleep, the muscles in your throat relax. For those with OSA, this causes the tongue to fall back and the airway to collapse. The MAD prevents this through three main actions:

      • Repositioning: It holds the lower jaw (mandible) in a slightly forward position.
      • Stabilization: It keeps the tongue from falling backward against the soft palate.
      • Tension: It creates slight tension in the soft tissues of the throat, making them less likely to vibrate (snore) or collapse.

MAD Airway Comparison

Did you know? Moving the jaw forward by just a few millimeters can increase the airway space significantly, often resolving mild to moderate apnea entirely.

Comparison: MAD vs. CPAP

Feature MAD (Dental Device) CPAP Machine
Mechanism Physical Jaw Advancement Pressurized Air
Noise Level Silent Low Hum
Power Required None Electrical Outlet
Best For Mild to Moderate OSA Moderate to Severe OSA

Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy

  • High Compliance: Patients find it easier to wear a mouthguard than a face mask.
  • Travel Friendly: Fits easily in a carry-on bag; no distilled water or cords required.
  • Discreet: No noise to disturb a sleeping partner.

Is a MAD right for you?

Consult with a sleep specialist or a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine to see if you are a candidate for a custom-fitted device.
