These steps prevent immediate bacterial buildup and keep your mask comfortable.
- The Mask: Wipe the cushion (the part that touches your face) with a damp cloth and mild soap, or use specialized CPAP wipes. This removes skin oils that can break down the silicone and cause leaks.
- The Water Chamber: Empty any leftover water. Do not let it sit! Rinse it with fresh water and let it air dry away from direct sunlight.
- Refill: Always use distilled water to prevent “scaling” or white mineral crust from forming.
Weekly Deep Clean (20–30 Minutes)
Once a week, you need to disinfect the “veins” of the system.
1. The Soak
Fill a sink or basin with warm water and a small amount of mild, fragrance-free dish soap (like Ivory or Dawn). Submerge the following:
- The mask (excluding the headgear if it’s not dirty).
- The breathing tube/hose.
- The water chamber.
2. The Scrub
- The Hose: Use a flexible CPAP tube brush to scrub the inside of the hose. If you don’t have one, swirl the soapy water back and forth vigorously inside the tube.
- The Chamber: Use a soft cloth to ensure no biofilm (slimy buildup) is forming in the corners.
3. The Rinse & Dry
- Rinse everything thoroughly with cool water until all suds are gone.
- Drying is critical: Hang the hose over a shower rod or towel rack so water can drain out of both ends. Place the mask and chamber on a clean towel to air dry.
Monthly & Long-Term Maintenance
Parts don’t last forever. Even with perfect cleaning, materials degrade.

- Skip the Dishwasher: Unless your specific manual says the water chamber is “dishwasher safe,” the heat can crack the plastic.
- Ozone/UV Cleaners: Be cautious with popular “CPAP cleaning machines.” Many manufacturers (like ResMed) have warned that ozone cleaners can damage the internal foam of the machine and may void your warranty.
Pro Tip for Mineral Buildup
If your water chamber develops white “crusty” spots, soak it in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. It’ll look brand new.
